7 Harry Potter cupcakes to celebrate Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II

Happy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II release day! Here are some cupcakes to help you celebrate:

Snitch cupcakes via Hoosier Homemade, where you can find more Harry Potter cupcake and cake pop fun

via The Pastry Affair, where you can get the recipe. From the post:

The butterbeer cupcake is essentially a brown sugar cupcake infused with cream soda and butter flavors. If that isn't good enough, the cupcakes are then filled with a butterscotch ganache, topped with a rich butterscotch buttercream, and drizzled with more butterscotch ganache. I'm not typically a fan of butterscotch, but these cupcakes absolutely changed my mind. The cupcake itself leans more on the denser side, but it still manages to feel light. The butterscotch buttercream is sweet, but not teeth-fall-out sweet (I don't typically like sweet frostings, but I ate this one by the spoonful. So good). Don't even get me started on the butterscotch ganache...

The Golden Snitch

In honor of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part 2) premiering tonight, my best friend Hillary and I made some Potterlicious cake balls. And obviously we chose the snitch because it plays such a vital role in the movies plot, and has nothing to do with the fact that snitches are round and therefore the perfect cake ball shape.

I found out that making cake pops is a lot easier than it was last time, because I found out you gotta put chocolate on the stick before you stick it in the cake. Like so:

The wings were a pain in my backside, though. I had a huge problem painting them silver. Originally, they were going to be spray painted silver, with Duff's cake graffiti...

But for some reason, the spray can stopped working after I did 2 pairs of wings. I'm really disappointed. I'm also sad that I still haven't gotten my airbrush machine, then I could've sprayed the wings silver and the cake part gold (Michael's doesn't sell gold cake graffiti). I ended up painting the wings with a silver glaze, which I personally think doesn't look as neat.

Plus, the painting took forever, and it was super messy.

The final cake balls looked really awesome, though. I used yellow candy melts, and gold dust mixed with lemon juice to make it sparkly and snitch like. Pretty fabulous, if I do say so myself. :)

When I ran out of wings, I covered the pops in gold sprinkles. Totally messy and not as pretty but they tasted good!

We also make cockroach clusters!

With real cockroaches! Just kidding. They're made with potato sticks and they are delicious. And also messy, but that's because it's hot and the chocolate melted.

So that's our adventure making Harry Potter sweets for the last movie! The candy trolly lady would be proud.

Harry Potter butterbeer cupcakes plus recipe link

Lots of Harry Potter fans out there in cupcakeland, or cupcake fans who are into Harry Potter, and with the release of the final movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II, we're seeing lots of butterbeer cupcakes! These are by blogger Cook Like a Champion, who has the recipe and writes:

You may recall the Frozen Butterbeer I posted last year. These cupcakes are basically that in dessert form. The original recipe called for butter flavor, but I wanted the cupcakes to be as close to my frozen butterbeer as possible and used butterscotch schnapps instead. The flavor is subtle, but that’s because the cupcakes get a huge dose of butterscotch goodness from the filling and frosting. After baking, they’re filled with a luscious butterscotch ganache, topped with butterscotch frosting and drizzled with the remaining butterscotch ganache. The butterscotch ganache isn’t as thick as a typical ganache; it’s more like a glaze, so it’s perfect for filling and drizzling. The buttery cake helps to balance out the sweetness of the filling and frosting, and the flavor is so close to butterbeer that it’s ridiculous. So even if you’re just a muggle that likes butterscotch, you will love these. I found that I had quite a bit of the butterscotch ganache leftover, and I think I could’ve easily gotten away with using half of it. I have reflected that change, as well as the substitution of the schnapps, in the recipe below. Also, I recommend using a vanilla cream soda (like Virgil’s) for the best flavor.

Butterbeer Harry Potter cupcakes

These Harry Potter cupcakes (the first this week of many, I predict) are by Omaha, Nebraska's PJ's Baby Cakes, via Flickr. You can find out more at pjsbabycakes.com and follow them on Twitter and Facebook. From their Flickr account:

Butterbeer Cupcakes are a buttery cream soda cake filled with a butterscotch ganache, topped with a butterscotch buttercream and drizzled with more butterscotch ganache. I adapted a few different recipes found on the internet and made an absolutely awesome cupcake. Possibly my favorite. Or maybe it's just all the butterscotch talking.

Fondant pieces were handmade by myself and one of my volunteers!
